Chess Boxing

The idea of chess boxing was conceived in 1992 by cartoonist Enki Bilal. The concept was that of combining both the mental focus of chess and the physical agility of boxing, bringing both into the boxing ring for a uniquely exhilarating and challenging competition.

Two opponents compete for eleven alternate rounds of boxing and chess sessions. They begin with four minutes of speed chess followed by two minutes of boxing and so on.

Of course, it is near impossible to move chess pieces with boxing gloves on, so the competitors have one minute to change between each round adding to the excitement and mounting pressure of the match.

The idea quickly gained in popularity and caught the imagination of promoters who ran the first world championship in Amsterdam in 2003. The 1st European Chess Boxing Championship took place in Berlin on 1 October 2005.

Since then Lefthook have been working closely with the GBCBO to bring this stimulating sport to London, becoming the first boxing gym in the UK to train and organise chess boxing competitions.
